Interesting Notes & FAQ's

How do I use these timings for my Madhab?

The main difference between Madhabs is for the Asr prayer:

  • Standard (Shafi, Maliki, Hanbali): Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its length (Earlier).
  • Hanafi: Asr begins when the shadow is twice the length (Later).

Note: This tool currently calculates using the Hanafi method (Later time) to be more inclusive since it works for all people. If you follow the majority opinion and you're not flying, your Asr time enters approximately 45-60 minutes before the time shown here.

Which Calculation Authority is used?

We use the Moonsighting Committee method as the "calculation authority". Different authorities (like ISNA, MWL, or Umm al-Qura) use slightly different sun angles to determine the exact start of Fajr and Isha .

This method is chosen for its reliability in international contexts, correlating astronomical calculation with visibility. However, you should always add a safety margin of +/- 10 minutes when traveling.

Why is In-Flight Prayer Time calculation so difficult?
  • Chasing the Sun: If you fly West, you extend the day (Dhuhr could last 5 hours). If you fly East, the night accelerates (Maghrib/Isha combined might be only 20 minutes).
  • Altitude: At 35,000ft, you can see further over the curve of the earth. This means the sun sets later and rises earlier than it does for people on the ground below you.
  • Great Circle Physics: Planes fly in arcs, often reaching high latitudes (near the North Pole) where standard math breaks down because the sun may not set for weeks. We use special "High Latitude Rules" to estimate times in these zones.
Can I use this flight prayer calculator offline?

This is a web-based calculator. We recommend inputting your flight details and taking a screenshot of the results before you take off, as internet access is often restricted during flights. This calculator uses the internet especially to get prayer times for departure and arrival locations, which is needed to calculate the in-flight prayer times accurately.

Are in-flight prayer time calculations exact?

No in-flight prayer time calculation can be exact due to constant movement and changing sun position. Islamic scholars agree that reasonable approximation is valid for travelers, and intention is what matters. Read more about how we calculate our inflight prayer times here.

What time should I break my fast in Ramadan while flying?

While it is recommended to not fast while traveling long distances due to the hardship, if you choose to fast, you should break your fast at Maghrib time of the location you are currently flying over, which is what this calculator shows you. This is because the sun's position relative to you determines the start and end of the fasting day, not your departure or arrival city.
